I’m telling you, it’s not just about the mountains. When you hike here, you pass right through these quiet, out-of-the-way communities. It’s cool because you actually get a chance to meet people who are really holding onto their traditional Quechua-culture. It’s so amazing to see that. You’ll also see these herds of animals—llamas, alpacas, sheep, you know—being led by the local shepherds. It’s just, like, so real.
Seriously, keep your eyes open. This area is packed with different kinds of wildlife. You can spot these huge condors soaring up high. There’s also the fast cara cara falcons and eagles too. If you’re lucky, really lucky, you might even get a glimpse of a wild vicuña. What a sight that would be.
Then you get to the main event, Rainbow Mountain. It’s absolutely mind-blowing. The natural, vibrant-colored-sandstone mountains are a total shock. You see all these different shades, it’s just not like anything else in Peru. It’s a totally unique kind of landscape that you have to see for yourself.
And if that wasn’t enough, there’s also the Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain and the Four Lakes. It’s a genuinely one-of-a-kind experience. Just incredible.

So, here’s this new tour route that’s seriously cool, combining mountains and lakes in one trip. The day starts really early, like 4:00 in the morning. A guide and a private van will pick you up right from your hotel in Cusco. It’s about a three-hour drive, but it’s worth it. We’re heading to Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain, a place that sits at an elevation of around 4,900 m (16,076 ft).
When you get there, the first thing is a hot breakfast that the chef prepares for us. Seriously, a hot breakfast out in the mountains, what a great way to start. After that, we’ll go to this perfect spot, a viewpoint with this amazing panorama of the rainbow mountain, the valleys, the glaciers… you’ll even see some alpacas and llamas roaming around.
After we’ve seen everything at Palcoyo, it’s back to the van. We’ll drive for about an hour to the Raqchi archaeological site, which is at an altitude of approximately 3,460 m (11,351 ft). This place is super old, from the 14th century, so you’ll want to take your time looking at everything. We get to have lunch there too, and I hear the views of the Andes are amazing.
Around 1:30 in the afternoon, we head out to see the Four Lakes, located in the Canas and Acopia province. The drive itself is pretty nice, passing through picturesque little villages and big valleys. Then, it’s the ride back to Cusco. We should get to your hotel around 6:00 p.m., which is a perfect time to relax after a long, but incredible, day.
