MACHU PICCHU TOUR BY EXPEDITION TRAIN – 1 DAY

Your journey begins with an early-morning-pickup at 4:00 a.m. from your hotel in Cusco. From there, you’ll be driven to the Ollantaytambo Train Station to catch the 6:10 a.m. Expedition-class train. (Alternatively, if you’re staying in Ollantaytambo, your pickup will be between 5:20 a.m. and 5:30 a.m.)

As the train travels along the Vilcanota River-canyon, you’ll be captivated by the steep, jungle-covered walls and may even spot ancient Inca terraces still in use today.

Upon your arrival in Aguas Calientes, you’ll be met by your guide and, after a quick snack, board a shuttle bus for the unforgettable ascent to the magnificent Machu Picchu Citadel. Your approximately two-hour guided-tour will explore the site’s three main sections: the agricultural, residential, and religious areas.

After your time exploring the incredible views, you’ll descend back to Aguas Calientes. You’ll have free time to enjoy lunch (at your own expense) and may have an opportunity to go shopping or visit the local museum or hot springs, depending on your return-train’s schedule.

The return journey on the Expedition train departs from Aguas Calientes at one of several available times (3:20 p.m., 4:22 p.m., 4:43 p.m., or 6:20 p.m.). The ride back offers more spectacular views of the Urubamba River, including narrow passages and whitewater rapids. You’ll even be able to see the impressive Inca site of Wiñay Wayna high on the canyon wall.

At the Ollantaytambo station, a private vehicle will be waiting to take you directly back to your hotel in Cusco, with an estimated arrival between 7:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.

Please note: Due to recent regulations, access to the Sun Gate and Inca Bridge is no longer permitted on this tour. Also, a one-day trip does not allow enough time to hike Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain.

The Expedition Train: This train service provides a comfortable and communal experience, with spacious seating and large panoramic-windows for incredible views. The train is equipped with air-conditioning and heating, and a cheerful atmosphere is maintained with traditional Andean music. Overhead racks provide a convenient place to store your backpacks.
