There’s a place that’s been calling my name for a while now, and it’s a non-negotiable on my travel hit list: the Ausangate mountain range. I’ve been craving an experience that’s both physically challenging and deeply connecting to nature, and I can’t stop thinking about what it would feel like to get lost in its untouched beauty.
I’m drawn to the idea of a two-day trek that isn’t just about the destination, but the entire journey—from the moment I step out of the car. The thought of exploring the incredible Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca), the stunning Red Valley, and seven serene lakes around the Ausangate peaks gives me goosebumps. I can’t wait to see the surreal, vibrant slopes of the Rainbow Mountain in person; I’ve seen pictures, but I know the real thing must be so much more magical.
I hope to stay in a luxurious glamping setup, a wild kind of comfort that lets me rest in style under the remote, star-filled sky. I want to feel the cool air on my skin and the immense peace of being surrounded by that landscape. It’s the kind of slow travel I’m craving. I know little about the traditional Quechua culture, so I’m excited to connect with the local communities and learn from people who have preserved their way of life for generations.
This isn’t just a trip; it’s a personal transformation. I can’t wait to check this destination off my list and come back with a new perspective, feeling refreshed and reconnected with myself and the world around me. I truly hope to make this trip soon.

I’m so excited to share what’s been on my mind lately—a journey to the stunning Ausangate region that’s been at the top of my bucket list. I can’t wait to start the day with an early-morning-pickup at 5 a.m. I know it’s early, but the anticipation will get me going! The three-hour-drive through the South Valley to the Llacto trailhead, located at an impressive 4,638 m / 15,216 ft, sounds like the perfect prelude to the adventure. I’m hoping to soak in the views of the ancient Inca-terraces and remote Andean-peaks along the way.
Then, there’s breakfast—I’ve heard it’s a trailside feast where you can actually watch herds of alpacas and llamas grazing nearby! What a surreal way to start a day of trekking. After that, the journey really begins with a beautiful hike alongside a picturesque-stream. I’m especially looking forward to the chance to interact with the local Quechua-people and learn about their traditional-culture and clothing.
The main event, of course, is the ascent. It’s a 1.5-hour climb to the incredible Rainbow-Mountain, which sits at a lofty 5,020 m / 16,466 ft. I can’t even imagine what it’ll feel like to stand there and take in the vibrant, colorful-slopes—I plan to spend a full 30 minutes just taking it all in and capturing some unforgettable photos. And the adventure doesn’t stop there! I’m also going to hike for another 45 minutes to the breathtaking Red-Valley. I’ve heard the descent back to the trailhead is much easier, and I’ll be daydreaming of the delicious lunch our trailside-chef will have waiting for us.
To end the day, I’m thrilled about the two-hour-drive to the peaceful town of Pacchanta, where I’ll be staying in a glamping-style accommodation right next to the natural hot-springs. The thought of relaxing in those waters after a long hike just feels so perfect. The day’s journey covers about 14 km (8.7 miles) over 5-6 hours, with an elevation gain from 4,200 m to 5,000 m. It’s a challenge I’m ready for. I truly believe this trip will be a transformative experience, and I can’t wait to get there!
After a delicious-breakfast-with-a-view of the surrounding mountains, your day begins with an initial 1.5-hour-ascent to the first of the seven high-altitude-lakes. From there, the trail becomes mostly flat or downhill, allowing you to easily visit the remaining six lakes. Be sure to have your camera ready for amazing shots of the glacial-lakes and the immense glaciers that feed them.
Following your tour of the lakes, you’ll stop for a rewarding lunch before beginning your return journey. A comfortable three-hour-drive will transport you back to Cusco, where you can expect a 5-p.m.-arrival and a drop-off directly at your hotel.
